Tips for Avoiding Water Damage

Water damage can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Whether the problem is caused by a major flood or a small leak that’s gone undetected for years, the result is often the same. Rotted wood, toxic mold growth, pest infiltration and weakened structural elements are all symptoms that can occur because of water damage. At Mr. Rooter of Atlanta, we have seen firsthand just how catastrophic these consequences can be. Our certified, licensed and insured plumbers want to ensure that our local clients don’t have to suffer such a fate. That’s why we proudly provide residential and commercial inspections, pipe repairs, clog removals, leak detection and other important plumbing maintenance services. If you live in Atlanta, Roswell, Marietta, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and other nearby communities, give us a call and find out what we can do to help keep your pipes flowing freely. Here are a few suggestions on how you and your loved ones can avoid unnecessary water damage.

Check for Signs of Leaks

Once a month, go through your home and check for signs of potential issues. If you notice stains or bulges on walls or flooring, or begin to smell a foul mildew odor, then you probably have a severe leak that needs to be repaired immediately. Also, if you see a sudden unexplainable spike in your monthly water bill, there could be a leak somewhere inside or outside the home.

Keep Your Pipes Clog Free

Clogs can create backups that might flood your bathroom or kitchen with sewage water. In addition, clogs can also put additional pressure on worn out pipes, causing conditions suitable for the formation of punctures and cracks. You can avoid severe clogs by establishing good habits, using appropriate tools and scheduling regular cleanings and clog removals from a trusted plumber. Never pour items like grease, melted wax, coffee grounds or broken egg shells down your drains, as these are the most common items known to quickly block water flow. Use appropriate traps and drain plugs to keep hair and soap residue to a minimum. If you do suspect a clog, be sure to call a professional as soon as possible, so the blockage doesn’t become larger and more difficult to remove.

Properly Winterize Your Plumbing System

Freezing temperatures can solidify the water inside your pipes, and create drastic changes in air pressure. If your pipes aren’t well insulated, they can easily burst, causing rapid flooding at the location of the break. Be sure to winterize before the winter seasons first frost to avoid these kinds of issues.

Plan Your Landscaping Carefully

Tree and shrub roots are often the enemy of a well maintained plumbing system. Even if you take excellent care of your pipes, having plants too close to your home or underground pipes could result in leaks due to root infiltration. Sewer lines are nutrient dense, and thirsty trees will naturally seek out a source that will provide unyielding amounts of nitrogen and water. If a tree or shrub has grown too close to your home’s foundation, you may need to remove it. Be careful not to plant new landscaping features near pipes buried in the yard, and use root barriers around plumbing for added protection. If you do suspect a leak in your outdoor pipes, you may want to consider installing a pipe liner to restore the integrity of your existing plumbing system.
