Method 1: Clean the Drain Stopper

The drain stopper is the first line of defense against foreign objects going into the drain line. It stops small objects from falling into the sink and catches some smaller debris like hair and toothpaste. The drain stopper must be regularly cleaned, however. Lift up the drain stopper and clean off any gunk and muck. If this does not resolve the clog, then continue reading.

Method 2: Using Drain Cleaners

There are many chemical drain cleaning products on the market, but we do not recommend using these. This is because many commercial drain cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good. They can damage pipes, drains, and other plumbing parts.

You don't need to shell out cash for a drain cleaner. We have a homemade option using only baking soda, vinegar, and water. This is only an option if the drains are partially clogged, meaning the sink eventually clears out.

Once the sink is clear, you can sprinkle a cup of baking soda into the drain and follow it up with a cup of white vinegar. This should set off a reaction which makes fizzling noise. After about ten or twenty minutes, rinse the drain by pouring a gallon of hot water.

Method 3: A Plunger

If your sink will not drain AT ALL or the previous method did not work, then pull out your plunger and some elbow grease. Gently lower the plunger into the sink to avoid splashing and set the lip of the plunger firmly around the drain to form a tight seal. Push down and up on the plunger to put pressure on the blockage and force it out of place.

Method 4: A Drain Snake

A drain snake is a long auger, or cable, with an uncoiled spring at one end and a handle on the other. Hold the handle and insert the other end into the drain until you feel it hit the blockage. Now, turn the drain snake while simultaneously pushing it through. You want to break through the blockage. Once you've gotten through, you can pull the drain snake back out and clean it off. Do this a few times to clear out as much of the blockage.
